My goal in 2021 has been to read more books of all kinds. Through this blog, I will reflect on various books and share what kind of inspiration and thoughts each book stirs up in my mind. I am currently halfway through a nonfiction book called “Walking Home From Mongolia: Ten Million Steps Through China from the Gobi Desert to the South China Sea” by Rob Lilwall. This book shares all about the experiences of two explorers, Rob and Leon, as they venture out into the Mongolian and Chinese wilderness amongst the elements of the Gobi Desert and beyond.
Rob and Leon’s journey reminds me of my dream of one day completing (at least in part) the Pacific Crest Trail that extends the entire West Coast of the USA through California, Oregon, and Washington.
Hiking and trekking through vast landscapes in unpredictable weather have proven to have their challenges for this book’s protagonists. This makes me reflect on just how much one needs to be prepared for a long trip spanning thousands of kilometres such as this. It’s crazy to think about all of the preparation, training, and mental strength one must have to venture out on such a journey, especially in a country where you do not speak the local language. The culture is foreign, which is the case in Walking Home From Mongolia. Good thing Rob and Leon have their magic letter to help get them by.
More details and thoughts for next time!
